Travel with Your Rabbit in Comfort

Share |

When traveling with your pet rabbit, it is a good idea to prepare ahead of time to make sure that your rabbit is comfortable during the trip. If you plan on staying at a hotel, check to see if you are allowed to keep your rabbit in the room. Rabbits should never be left in the car, especially during the summer, overnight.

- Mode of transportation. Whether you are in the car or traveling by plane, choose a carrier that will be comfortable for the trip. A hard plastic carrier, such as the Marchioro Skipper Pet Carrier, is great for either type of transportation.

  • If you are traveling by plane, check with the airline first to find out their requirements for rabbits. It is best to take your bunny with you in the planes cabin, so check with the airline first to find out if they allow rabbits in the cabin and what their size requirements are for the carrier.
  • If you decide to travel by car, pick a carrier that is large enough to comfortably hold all of your rabbits essentials. A large carrier also allows your pet more space to relax in.

- Think about the weather. Hot weather is hard for your rabbit to tolerate, so make sure that you provide your rabbit with plenty of ventilation if traveling by car. It is a good idea to provide your rabbit with plenty of cool water for the ride. A great no-mess waterer for rabbits is the Tirso Water Bottle by Marchioro. This water works great in a carrier and won’t make a mess. If you are traveling by plane and your rabbit has to travel in the cargo hold, try to schedule your travel in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler.

- Always makes sure your rabbit is properly identified. Write your phone number and other information on a sticker and place it on your rabbits cage. If there is a possibility that your rabbit could be separated from you, write your phone number with temporary, non-toxic ink on the inside of the rabbit’s ear. In addition, you can add an ID tag to your rabbit’s walking vest to help identify your rabbit.

Dont forget to pack your rabbits essentials, such as food, bottled water, treats, toys, hay, wood or mineral chews, harness with a leash, and more. Make a checklist of all of the items that your rabbit will need for traveling and be sure to bring them with you. Bringing all of your rabbits creature comforts will help to keep your happy and healthy during your trip.
